The Philippine Society of Geriatric Medicine (PSGM), the Okinawa Gerontology Institute (OGI), and the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center announce a joint International Congress to be held at the historic Manila Hotel. Local and foreign dignitaries will be in place as the event will be kicked off with the keynote address by the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. President Arroyo is expected to ask the leaders and members of the three organizations to develop a solid temple to lay the foundation of healthy aging and longevity, which includes a healthcare system driven by the right public health policies. The theme for the Congress is: “Longevity, Public Health and Policy.” In her welcoming remarks posted on the conference website, Shelley F. de la Vega, MD, President of PSGM, says that PSGM’s goals for this gathering are “to provide continuing medical education for health promotion and disease prevention and to help build political will among public policy-makers to devise and support efforts for the study and improvement of healthcare of the elderly.” In his posted remarks, David Itokazu, MD, Chairman of OGI, cited the historic themes of the various venues that serve as the inspiration for this and previous OGI-sponsored conferences. The backdrop of this, the 3rd Okinawa International Conference on Longevity, is: “the traditional lifestyles or mores of the people of Okinawa and the Filipinos customs related to longevity.” Dr. Itokazu for the first time will present also his research paper attributing Okinawa longevity to public health system introduced by the US Administration circa, 1945-1972. Both Dr. de la Vega and Dr. Itokazu bring decades of noteworthy professional accomplishments to this joint effort. Dr. de la Vega has been a formidable advocate for elderly care in the Philippines, leveraging her scientific talents, personal charm, and political savvy. Dr. Itokazu is well respected around the world for his strident efforts to articulate the impressive phenomenon of healthy longevity among Okinawa’s 1.3 million people. He successfully forged strategic alliances with international organizations and individuals and this year’s Congress is the culmination of his hard labor. The 350 expected attendees and speakers will include scientists, clinicians, academicians, policy makers, and others interested in healthy aging and longevity of populations. Judging from the conference schedule, this joint gathering is certain to stimulate lively dialogue that will achieve the greater good. |
