PSGM Values and Mission

Members of the Philippine Society of Geriatric Medicine
(PSGM) gathered in Nasugbu, Batangas for a Vision-Mission-
and-Values Workshop entitled “Designing Our Future
Together”. Those fruitful two days in January yielded the
defining elements that give structure and meaning to any
service-oriented body. The Society’s VISION has been set
down thus: “To become the premier multi-disciplinary
organization in achieving the highest standards of health care
for older persons in the Philippines, towards a nation that is
nurturing to all generations”. This vision reflects the fact that
caring for the elderly is the responsibility not only of
physicians, but also allied medical professionals, families,
and government. There is a saying that it takes a village to
raise one child. We at the PSGM believe that it takes a team
to care for one elderly person.

The Society’s MISSION is to “achieve the highest standard of
health care through relevant, scientific, and competent
practice of geriatric medicine”. This is our mission not only to
older persons in the community but also to the medical
community, to allied health professionals, and to Filipino
society at large. We carry out this mission by means of
empowerment of the elderly, and education of the community.

The VALUES of the PSGM are embodied by the acronym S.E.
R.V.I.C.E.S: the use of Scientific and evidence-based
medicine; Excellence in all our endeavors; Relevance to our
patients and to society; Versatility in caring for our patients;
Interdisciplinary team approach; Compassion for our patients
and their loved ones; the practice of Ethics in all aspects of
our lives; and Spirituality, which is a core element in the lives
of the elderly.

Lofty goals may not be attainable at all times, but having such
goals encourages effort and the pursuit of higher principles
which can only benefit those who strive for them. This
newsletter represents only one of the many ways by which
the PSGM strives to live up to its vision and mission, and to
live by its stated values.
